danny d asked:

after all, if a truck hitting the wall can do so much damage, just what would a 8.0 earthquake do? thousands would get killed!

It wasnt the hitting the wall that caused the damage.. it was the fireball inferno after

as for a 8.0 earthquake hitting California?
engineers wouldn’t be worried about just a freeway collapsing
the entire area hit would collapse

The truck hitting the wall did not collapse the freeway. The fire, which was estimted to have burned at about 2700 degrees or so, caused the collapse.
If an 8.0 earthquake hit the Bay Area, yes, many would be injured or killed by the Tsunami.

the failure mechanism is much different from a fire than from an earthquake.

In design, the goal is to reduce catastrophic or sudden failure, and that is exactly what happened

of much more concern is the information gathered in this accident, and how it could be used
