Are there any MS Programs in bridge design around?

Chris O asked:

I will be graduating with a BS in Civil Engineering soon, and want to go into bridge design. Are there any masters programs in the midwest specifically for bridge design, or are all of them a more general structural engineering program.

Will there be an increase of engineering jobs in the near future?

NeoElectric asked:

“WASHINGTON – President-elect Barack Obama, who is set to announce his economic team, promoted an economic plan Saturday he said would create or save 2.5 million jobs by spending billions of dollars to rebuild roads and bridges and modernize schools while developing alternative energy sources and more efficient cars.”

“‘We’ll put people back to work rebuilding our crumbling roads and bridges, modernizing schools that are failing our children, and building wind farms and solar panels,” Obama said. He also made a commitment to fuel-efficient cars and alternative energy technologies “that can free us from our dependence on foreign oil and keep our economy competitive in the years ahead.’”

Probability of bridge repair?

Monty asked:

An engineering firm shows that the probability is 0.2 that one of its new bridges will require repair within a year.

A) What is the probability that the tenth bridge it builds will be the second one to require repair within a year?

B) What is the probability that the sixth bridge it builds will be the first one to require repair?

Engineers: Best Bridge Structural Efficiency?

Joshy asked:

Hey guys,

I am creating a bridge out of 3/32″ Balsa Wood, and need to give it the best structural efficiency.

I have asked this question before, but got minimal replies.

Which type of bridge has more potential for great Structural Efficiency, meaning, what design can I use that will be very light, and carry the biggest load possible.

To put this into perspective, I need to carry a maximum load of 15,000g (15KG), looking for the total mass of the bridge to be about 10 grams.

These numbers are not exact, and I dont need to hold the biggest mass, I just need the best structural efficiency (E=Max Load Supported/Mass of Bridge)

Thanks for looking, I only have a couple of days to do this so any tips are appreciated!

There is a general wiki article with the types of bridges =D

Question to engineers about that bridge collapse?

vcxzzxcvvcxzzxcv asked:

Am I the only person that finds it odd that someone would make an ARCH bridge where the arch is made out of steel?

The arch in an arch bridge is always under compression, and steel is not that great under compression. I think a small layer of steel reinforced concrete under the steel arches would have made that bridge last forever. There are stone arches that were built over 1000 years ago still standing, but thats because stone and concrete are great under compression. Steel arches are pretty much worthless and give you a false sense of security.

Anyone else feel this way?

The recent bridge collapsed in America, killing and wounding some is worrisome, what is the cause?

oscar boom asked:

American government spend millions of dollars in Iraq in a day one wonders why they did not heed ealier warning by engineers concerning the bridge, why fight terrorism outside and neglect your own citizens, I think now is the time for America to do a rethink concerning its policies, they have an intimidating recources the best in the world, but what the use if things like this happens, it could happen any place in the world, this i agree but my concern is why did the government neglect the warning of their engineers some years back only for this to happen, I was sad to see what happened on CNN. My heart bleed for those who lost loved ones do to government neglect. I WHANT TO KNOW WHY DID IT HAPPENED AND WHOSE FAULT IS IT.

Bridge circuits in RTDs - why are they there? how do they work?

annelisakova asked:

Why would it have to have 4 sides to the circuit? Are they comparing resistance in one arm to that in another? If the two arms don’t have the same resistance, what happens? Why do they have one variable resistor and one resistor with an undefined value? I know that heat varies resistances in the materials used, so that an RTD is an effective temperature/heat indicator. But what I’ve read about how the bridge circuit that measures the current/resistance doesn’t make sense to me. Could someone explain in non-technical terms (I’m new to engineering) how the bridge circuit works in an RTD, and the purpose of each arm? Thank you for your help!

Question about Bridge Estimation project? Thanks?

hawk31 asked:

We got this project in class, and he never said anything besides to put the final estimation in lbs and tons. Other than that I don’t have any ideas of how to do this. I was wondering if someone could give me some tips or ideas about how to do this or any other help you could supply.

You are to perform a weight estimation of the first floor entrance bridge on the Engineering Sciences Building (located on campus).

You will prepare a report with the drawings, figures, and references needed to complete a written report. The report will contain all of the assumptions that were used to arrive at the final weight estimation.

Thanks to anyone who helps. I just don’t know where to begin.

Computer Engineering or Software Engineering?

potvin.mike asked:

Hey all, I’m currently looking to bridge into year 2 of a Bachelor’s degree, but my problem is, I can’t decide on which diploma course to get to bridge into it.

Software Engineering or Computer Engineering?

I have interests in both courses but I’m unsure which diploma is better to have on the side, the Bachelor degree is of Information Science.

Anyone have any comments or input on which diploma would be better to have on the side etc?

thanks

Do you think vibrations from the earth caused the bridge to fall and the mines to cave in?

ndnquah asked:

Seems like it wouldn’t take an engineer to figure that out. What do you think?
I’m talking about the Utah mine! Sorry!
